A Minimal Stack for a Two-Person Team

Quick answerTwo-person teams don't need a tool per function. They need the fewest tools that cover the most ground without a paid seat sitting mostly idle. The right minimal stack is usually 3-4 tools total, each chosen because its free tier or lowest paid tier genuinely fits two people, not because it's the market leader.

What “minimal” actually optimizes for

Not price alone. The real target is idle-seat waste. A tool priced for teams of 10 but bought for 2 people is paying for eight seats nobody uses. The minimal-stack question for each category is: does the free tier or lowest paid tier fit two people specifically, or are we buying headroom we don’t need yet?

How to build the list

  1. List the functions you actually need covered (not the functions a “complete stack” article says you need).
  2. For each function, check free_tier first. Perpetual free tiers built for small teams are the natural fit here.
  3. Where no free tier fits, check price_from at the lowest price_period. Does it scale down to 2 seats without waste?
  4. Cut anything that duplicates another tool’s coverage. A minimal stack has no two tools doing the same job “just in case.”

Four tools run through the test

Here is the test applied to four tools that each cover a different job: automation, design, voice, and email. The prices come from each vendor’s own pricing page, checked in September. Where a price only applies to yearly billing, the table says so.

What the table says for a team of two:

  • MailerLite lists 2 user seats on its free plan, which matches a two-person team exactly. You pay only when your list or sending volume outgrows the free limits.
  • Figma charges by seat type. Besides the Full seat, it sells a Dev seat at $12/month and a Collab seat at $3/month, both billed yearly. If only one of you designs, check whether the other person needs a Full seat at all.
  • Zapier and ElevenLabs meter usage: tasks and credits. What pushes you to a paid plan is how much you run, so estimate volume before you upgrade. Check how many people each free plan allows before two of you build on it.
